How to Find Scholarships for Science Majors

The costs of attending college are rising at alarming rates each year. The majority of students and their families will have to accept a financial aid package (including scholarships, grants, and loans) to cover those costs. Students--whether you are a college freshman or senior--you can help to minimize the amount of loans you will need to pay for college.

The costs of attending college are rising at alarming rates each year. The majority of students and their families will need to accept a financial aid package (including scholarships, grants, and loans) to cover those costs. Students—whether you are a college freshman or senior—you can help to minimize the amount of loans you will need to pay for college.

Research scholarships online.

First of all, I encourage everyone to apply for scholarships outside in addition to your financial aid package from your college. You don’t want to take out loans unnecessarily because those loans must be paid back after you graduate from college.

I recommend that you search for scholarships specific to your major in common databases such as Google, MSN, or Yahoo. Also, don’t forget about government agency websites. For example, if you are interested in pursuing a career in environmental science, feel free to visit the EPA’s (Environmental Protection Agency) website, www.epa.gov. CollegeXpress even has its own scholarship search—have you tried it? The benefit of scholarship search sites is that the information to apply is all streamlined into one consistent format, so it's easier to search.

Prepare foundational paragraphs for scholarship essay questions.

When you are researching scholarships which require an essay, you will notice patterns of particular questions listed below:

  • Describe your leadership style.

  • What is your perspective on a well-known fact or quote?

  • Who or what has influenced your career choice?

  • Why do you want to attend college?

  • Why do you deserve this scholarship?

In order to save time and apply for as many scholarships as possible, write out basic paragraphs answering these questions. Thus, when it is time to send in your essay, you won’t have to start from nothing, but you will have a running start with your essays.

Ask your employer or your parent’s employer about scholarships.

Your parent’s employer may provide scholarships, so don’t pass this opportunity up. Also, you can inquire with the Human Resources department at your job about reimbursement or scholarships. You will never know if scholarships exist if you never inquire about them.

Ask the leaders in your community (religious or charitable organizations).

Many community organizations provide scholarships for the students who reside in the area. So, I encourage you to inquire with local churches, businesses, and charities about scholarships for residents in the community.

In conclusion, you want to make college as least expensive as possible for yourself, which requires some work on your part. Your hard work will be worth the effort.

$10,000 Scholarship Winner, 2021

I first discovered CollegeXpress during my sophomore year of high school while researching colleges that interested me. My SAT prep class the following year further familiarized me with the opportunities available through the organization. CX has personally helped me by exposing me to a diverse selection of schools as well as scholarships and life tips that have provided valuable guidance in my college search.

This scholarship will help me adjust to college life without worrying as much about tuition. This gives me more room to truly explore and benefit from all aspects of higher education. I plan to study Conservation Biology and work protecting species/ecosystems. I’m looking forward to getting field experience and seeing firsthand the problems research is solving.

Being a sophomore in high school, I never really worried about college. I thought it wasn't important to worry about until senior year. Through this program opportunity I came across, I realized how important it is to start looking at colleges early and start planning ahead. CollegeXpress has opened my eyes to what colleges require, what colleges are near me, and what they offer. The daily emails I get from CollegeXpress really help me look at the different options I have and what colleges I fit into. Without this website, I would not be taking the time out of my day to worry about what my future will be nor what opportunities I have. I could not be more grateful for such an amazing and useful website. It's thanks to CollegeXpress that not only me but my family now know how much potential I have in to getting into these colleges/universities that we thought were out of my reach.

It's an honor for me to be writing to share a little about my experience with CollegeXpress. I've been using CollegeXpress for about a year now, and the reason why I chose it is because it provides astonishing scholarships for every student around the globe. Besides that, this organization dispenses all the information necessary to help students get to college. CollegeXpress has helped me have an easier experience with applying to colleges and choosing the best fit for myself.

CollegeXpress has helped me find scholarships for the colleges I applied to. It was very hard for me to find scholarships in the beginning that I was qualified for. My teachers recommended this website to find some, and not only did I find some scholarships but I also got to look into some schools I hadn’t heard of before. I was very happy to have discovered this website, especially with the coronavirus spreading all over as I can’t really go visit many colleges.

CollegeXpress has provided me with tips that were for college students, but as a high school junior, they were still very useful. Not only that, it also gave me an idea of what to expect when it comes to going to college or already being in college. I want to say thank you to CollegeXpress, and I hope you continue the wonderful tips until I hopefully get into college and throughout my college journey.
